I think that everyone has a unique experience of healthcare but that actually we can make a big difference in small ways. I am very passionate in my belief that communication is really important and can make a huge difference. If doctors and patients communicated well then I think we would pick up more cancers earlier and we would be able to reduce the impact this has on patients. We could make a big difference by just changing one thing – and its cheap!

I have found it really interesting learning more about post-traumatic stress disorder in the course of my research. I have recently been learning about ‘psychogenic amnesia’, which is a type of memory impairment that can occur after severe life stress or trauma. Some people who have been through traumatic experiences, can’t remember key details about the traumatic events, and sometimes they can’t remember whole events or whole years of their lives when traumatic things were happening to them. Obviously, this can be very distressing for them, but it is so fascinating that the mind can overhaul our memories in such a significant way. Talking to people who have had these kind of experiences is really interesting.

I’ve learned a lot about how our brains develop, and how different experiences in early infanthood can impact on that development. I don’t think I can pick out one single most interesting thing as there are so many and they are all related to each other!
