In my third year I chose my subjects to study such as Forensic Psychology and I completed my first piece of research, which is where I fell in love with it!MSc Clinical Psychology – University of Hertfordshire
My masters degree taught me in more depth about areas of Psychology such as psychopathology (mental illness) and assessing, diagnosing and treating individuals. I also completed more research and was taught further on how to conduct research and look at my specialist area more.PhD Psychology – The University of Hertfordshire
Here I was able to focus on my passion which is Autism and mental illness. I was able to research this in detail, and publish my work and share peoples stories. I live in Hertfordshire with my husband and two children. We have a fully accredited assistance dog named Sebby who looks after my youngest son but also comes with me to work on occasions! I have ADHD and ASD and am proud to show what you can achieve regardless of a diagnosis. I love to ice skate and can quote every single word to the film ‘Scream’. I have an obsession with Batman and have a huge Joker tattoo on my leg!

As a developmental psychologist I work with children and young people who have or are suspected of having Autistic Spectrum Disorder. My work includes helping formulate a diagnosis by completing the Autism Diagnosis Observation Schedule or the Autism Diagnostic Interview with parents. I help young people (and parents and teachers) realise their potential and help them get the help and support they need. I also spend lots of time researching Autism and mental health conditions and this means I get to spend time with young people and hear their stories! The great thing about my job is that I get to spend time with people all day, and no day is ever the same! I go to schools, clinics, and sometimes simply work from my home office ๐
-
My Typical Day:
I get up really early (thanks to my children) and then I look at my calender. Some days I go straight into the office and set up for my clinics, or I am going into a school to observe a young person. Some days I spend time interviewing and conducting research which means lots of time in front of the laptop (so lots of breaks, fluids and walks!)

A Typical day at work for me is…
Morning Clinics:
The ADOS is a play based assessment assessing a child for Autism so I get to spend time playing and interacting with children which is great fun! For older children we sit and have a chat about all kinds of different things. When I work with parents we take very detailed information all about their child which means I have to concentrate very hard!
If I am not conducting assessments I may go into schools and meet with a childs teachers and watch the young person and how they are managing and coping at school.
Lunch:
The most important time of the day. I like to put my headphones in and listen to music, or watch an episode of something on my phone and relax for 45 minutes!
Afternoon:
Typically in the afternoons I will write my reports from the morning clinics, or I will make some phone calls. If I am researching I will work on my paper, or my interviews or meet with young people to speak with them about their experiences of worries, anxiety and Autism.

What I'd do with the prize money:
I would love to raise awareness to ADHD and Autism within the field of Psychology – having either (or both!) does not mean you cannot go on to achieve anything you put your mind too!
